URGENT: Great News!  Auto Insurance Companies Respond to “Safer At Home”

by | Apr 9, 2020 | Auto & Home

In response to COVID-19, and the fact that our entire population has been driving significantly less since the Governor issued the “Safer At Home” and “Shelter In Place” orders in March, auto insurance companies are beginning to respond.

Mercury Insurance issued a statement to agents today, letting us know that they are planning to give 15% of monthly premiums back to customers in April and May 2020. This applies to all California Private Passenger Automobile customers.

As soon as they receive guidance and approval from the Department of Insurance, they will notify customers and agents of the process to give back money to customers.

Since premium reductions will be applied for the months of April and May, mid-term annual mileage changes will be suspended unless there is an additional vehicle policy change.

Customers will not need to take any actions to receive the benefits. The credits will be applied automatically to the customer’s policy and those customers who have paid in full will receive a payment of the credited amounts. Customers will see it reflected in their accounts within a few weeks after month end.

If you have a balance on the policy, we’ll apply the credit directly to the remaining balance. If you’ve already paid in full, we’ll return the money to the payment account we have on file — please make sure your payment details are up to date.

United Agencies works with a number of auto insurance carriers, and we are continuing to monitor responses from all providers, however not all providers have released a statement about what they are going to do for customers.

That said, most auto insurance carriers have already announced they will be extending additional payment options and waiving the requirement for photos, for those adding vehicles and/or coverage.

It’s important to note that for most carriers, the commercial exclusion for delivering food in a personal vehicle has been temporarily removed.  This was done because it is understood that a larger number of people are needing to deliver food for restaurants and food providers, than under normal circumstances.
